Founded in 1950, Doctors with Africa CUAMM was the first NGO focused on healthcare to be recognized by the Italian government. It is now one of the leading organization working to protect and improve the well-being and health of vulnerable communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The NGO promotes long-term health cooperation projects, intervening also in emergencies to ensure that services are available to all.
Doctors with Africa CUAMM is currently active in 9 Sub-Saharan countries: Angola, Ethiopia, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda.
The NGO supports public and non-profit hospitals, local districts, schools of nursing and midwifery, university faculties of medicine.
CUAMM’s action focuses on health system strengthening and targets the weakest population groups, particularly women and children. Interventions include prevention, screening and treatment programmes; development or strengthening of referral systems at community level; training of health staff; management support and technical assistance to local health institutions; field research.
CUAMM’s international and national staff work together on the front line to strengthen local health systems, in resource-limited contexts where the commitment and contribution of the individual can make a real difference.

Purpose of the role
Within a project on maternal and child health, the Construction Expert is responsible for the construction and rehabilitation works in Abobo Hospital and the health centres involved in the project, ensuring that they are carried out properly, on schedule and according to the required quality standards.
Key responsibilities
- Ensuring that the construction and rehabilitation activities foreseen by the project are carried out regularly, in compliance with local regulations and according to the agreements with the authorities
- Verifying that the builder guarantees the availability of the necessary materials and equipment
- Identifying potential critical issues and site problems, analysing and proposing solutions
- Liaising with the local company manager and supporting the workers of the local company in all activities carried out on the site
- Checking that site operations and works are carried out in the agreed manner and timeframe, ensuring their technical quality and supervising work safety
- Monitoring the compliance with the agreed schedule annexed to the contract
- Drafting reports on activities and progress
- Ensuring the availability of the documentation required for reporting purposes
- Ensuring the technical supervision and the quality of rehabilitation and construction works
- Ensuring the proper management of tendering and/or administrative procedures related to construction and rehabilitation works
Requirements
Requirements
- University Degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering or equivalent title
- Good knowledge of French
- Good knowledge of Italian
- Solid professional experience in supervising construction and rehabilitation works with NGOs in fragile countries and/or low-resources settings
- Proven experience in managing tender in the field of construction/rehabilitation and good knowledge of related administrative procedures
- Problem-solving aptitude and organizational skills
Other information
TERMS OF CONTRACT
Type of contract: collaboration contract
Salary: TBD according to NGO salary grids and compensation policy (basic salary for the job position, with possible increase based on professional experience)
Annual leave: 2.5 days for each month of work, for contracts longer than 4 months
Flight ticket: one return flight
Health issues: the NGO provides health insurance and covers vaccination costs
Visa and permits: the NGO bears the cost and paperwork for visa and work/residence permits
Accommodation: provided by the NGO, it is generally individual, depending on the logistical situation and the availability of accommodation in the workplace
Other costs: the NGO covers costs related to housing utilities and internet; food and personal expenses are covered by the worker
Family policy: where the socio-political context and logistics allow it, international staff may be accompanied by their partner or family. In this case, the NGO provides a salary supplement and guarantees flights, health insurance, visas and permits for dependents and accompanying family members.
