The New Roots Program Manager is responsible for oversight of New Roots in Salt Lake City, a vibrant agriculture and food access program that provides farming and gardening opportunities for refugees and other new Americans in Salt Lake City, as well as promoting the development of sustainable and accessible healthy food systems in Salt Lake County. This position will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of all New Roots food and agriculture activities, including a robust community gardening program, a farm incubator, multiple seasonal farmers markets, and food access programming. Primary responsibilities include recruitment and supervision of staff, program strategy and operations, funding and reporting, partnership management, media relations, and other duties as needed. This is a full-time regular position.
Major Responsibilities:
I.Program Development, Administration, and Fundraising
- Collaborate with Food Entrepreneurship Program Officer and key New Roots staff on strategic planning including fundraising, program growth and improvement, program design, and evaluation.
- Building and maintaining close working relationships with program partners, the local food community, and stakeholders in all areas of the program is essential. The Program Manager will develop and maintain partnerships to support New Roots programming. Key partners include refugee leaders, other non-profits, Utah State University, USDA agencies, and Salt Lake County.
- Represent New Roots SLC within the national New Roots network and collaborate with other New Roots offices as needed.
- Work with Food Entrepreneurship Program Officer to identify key fundraising opportunities and oversee private foundation grant writing and fundraising opportunities for New Roots. Work with SLC Finance team, IRC SLC Executive Director, and Food Entrepreneurship Program Officer to administrate grants, including completing all programmatic reports and supporting financial reporting.
- Foster collaboration within the IRC SLC office with other programs on joint programming and fundraising.
II. Supervision and Program Oversight
- Recruit, hire, and supervise all key New Roots staff and support program coordinators in supervising seasonal positions, AmeriCorps VISTAs, interns, and volunteers.
- Facilitate bi-monthly team meetings and communication between team members of project activities.
- Review and provide feedback on outreach, curriculum, evaluations, and other program materials.
- Assist staff members in overseeing farming, gardening, and food access project areas, and in designing protocols, program structure, and program delivery methods and oversee implementation.
- Provide professional development opportunities for staff through the IRC learning portal, relevant regional and national workshops and conferences, and mentorship on new skill development.
III. Service Provision
- Support design and management of training, application processes and workshops for participants.
- Support New Roots staff in identifying and providing access to outside resources from partners in key areas including food businesses, community gardening, agriculture, farm business, etc.
- Maintain strong relationships with staff overseeing marketing activities, including the Sunnyvale Farmers Market and farm-to-school sales, including oversight of financial protocols for sales, assistance with design of aggregation systems, and support of food safety planning.
- Troubleshoot challenges with clients and determine solutions that benefit participants and the program.
IV. Tracking
- Manage data collection and tracking efforts and oversee implementation of comprehensive New Roots process and impact evaluations.
- Ensure appropriate documentation of program services including entering data into the program’s information data systems and other internal tracking forms/systems.
- Oversee evaluation efforts including developing new tools for pre- and post- evaluations, tracking monetary gains, and keeping records of farm and garden sites.
- Adapt and oversee dissemination of food access surveys and other data collection tools to identify food security needs of refugee community members.
Job Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree, or equivalent experience, in Agronomy, Economics, Finance, Business, Non-profit Management, or related field.
- Minimum of 4+ years related work experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of agriculture, food business development, and food access work.
- Strong organizational skills including: multi-tasking, prioritizing, planning, and effective time management.
- Proven track record with fundraising and grants management and administration.
- Motivated, flexible and able to work independently.
- Fluency in written and spoken English, with bi-lingual ability preferred.
- Ability to communicate with limited-English speakers.
- Demonstrated multi-cultural experience.
- Valid driver’s license, active insurance policy and access to reliable transportation.
Work Environment:
- Standard office work environment along with travel in and around the service delivery area.
- Ability to safely lift 30lbs.
