Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by supporting the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind. 
 
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division is responsible for all programmes and activities related to fisheries and aquaculture and their sustainable development, with particular emphasis on human well-being, food security and poverty reduction; sustained production systems including through the protection of the environment and preservation of biodiversity and the promotion of responsible fishing practices; post-harvest utilization, marketing and trade with due regard to food security and the well-being of fishing communities; collection, compilation, validation, trend analysis and dissemination of the best available and up-to-date fishery statistics and for the syndication of the FAO information on all aspects of world fisheries and aquaculture.

The post is located in the Information and Knowledge Management Team (NFISI), which holds the responsibility for fulfilling the functions of the Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries and Aquaculture (ASFA) Secretariat serving the ASFA Partnership composed of 66 Partners. The position is based at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Fishery Officer reports to the Senior Fishery Information Officer (NFISI Team Leader).

Technical Focus
International cooperative information systems; abstracting and indexing services; ASFA Database; fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic science information; bibliographic metadata; subject, taxonomic and geographic indexing; abstract writing; editing; provision of training and support services to ASFA Partners, guidelines writing”

Key Results
Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions
•   Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects as well as products and services.
•    Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.
•    Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.
•    Updates databases and web pages.
•    Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.
•    Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.
• Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

 

Specific Functions

• Supports the work of the ASFA Secretariat, including the ASFA Board Meeting and the ASFA Working Groups, the recruitment of new ASFA partners or associates, the related administration of ASFA online reports for ASFA Partners, Collaborating Centres and Associates.
•  Supports the ASFA project life cycle, for planning and implementation and for compliance with all monitoring and reporting requirements and financial management of the five years Trust Fund. 
• Supports the development, deployment and maintenance of the ASFA software and guidelines, and ensures that training and assistance is provided to ASFA Partners for efficient use of the software. 
• Contributes to the development of ASFA’s Business Model by liaising with the Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) and ASFA Impact and Strategies Committee, and by supporting the development of new pilot services or new partnerships such as AGRIS, IAMSLIC, iMarine.
• Develops and promotes ASFA’s information products and visibility, both internally at FAO and externally to those working in fisheries and aquaculture.
• Manages and develops the ASFA Subject Vocabulary, while developing partnerships with AGROVOC, and supports the preparation of ASFA bibliographic records with abstract and indexing, for FAO publications.

 

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in Biology, Aquatic Sciences and/or Library-Information Sciences.
• Three years of relevant experience in the use of documentation/scientific information systems in the field of fisheries and aquaculture.
• Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills
• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
• Extent and relevance of experience in collecting, managing and analysing aquatic sciences information and data  
• Extent and relevance of knowledge and experience in related fields such as fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic biology
• Extent and relevance of experience in the preparation, editing and revision of technical/scientific documents and in organizing meetings, workshops and training courses
• Extent and relevance of experience in project planning and monitoring, and in working in partnerships
• Extent and relevance of experience in working with scientific bibliographic databases (e.g. ASFA), thesauri, and information systems

  • Extension of fixed term appointments is based on certification of performance and availability of funds
  • FAO reserves the right not to make an appointment.
