Duties and ResponsibilitiesOrganization Setting:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy announcement is meant to solicit applications for rostering purposes to serve as the pool of expertise that UNEP West Asia Office is creating within the framework of the long-term strategic partnership and the Saudi Environment Sustainability Programme with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia.
Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in Saudi Arabia, the expert will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties and responsibilities:
1. Technical advisory services and guidance to MEWA in the areas of climate adaptation, community resiliency, and climate risk management;
2. Conduct vulnerability assessments and provide strategic advice and input to the development of the adaptation strategies for urban and/or natural systems through research and community engagement;
3. Technical inputs in the development of climate action plans that describe projected climate impacts, quantify current and future greenhouse gas emissions, and identify strategies to build resiliency and reduce emissions;
4. Provide technical guidance, training and capacity building on climate change to MEWA and executive centers.
Expected Outputs and Deliverables
The consultant will be expected to provide strategic guidance and technical oversight the following outputs:
1. Development of an adaptation strategy for climate change;
2. An adaptation strategy for urban and natural systems;
3. Capacity building and training delivered;
4. Monthly progress report;
5. Final report.
Qualifications/special skills
Master’s degree in climate change, environmental science or any other relevant field is required. PHD is an asset.
A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in climate change, climate science, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, and land carbon sequestration processes is required.
Demonstrated experience with creating strategic plans, climate action plans, or other similar environmental or sustainability plans is desirable.
Knowledge of climate change and environment issues in Saudi Arabia is an asset.
Experience working in West Asia is desirable.
LanguagesFluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
