The Role:

For summer 2023, students will join our teams in India or Nepal for eight weeks to assist with on-the-ground development economic research within our portfolio (gender, political economy, and the environment). Our internships are ideal for candidates interested in learning more about applied economic research in fields ranging from development, labor, environmental, and/or gender economics, to political economy. The Inclusion Economics Summer Research Intern will contribute to the planning and implementation of primary data collection and related activities associated with applied development economics research (including surveys and programmatic interventions) in India and Nepal. This may include management and tracking of incoming data and basic data cleaning and analysis. Candidates may also be asked to conduct literature reviews, draft policy briefs and memos, provide support for the training of government partners, and/or provide support for additional research-linked activities.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Training in economics or a related field
  • Strong quantitative skills and some experience with Stata
  • Highly-motivated self-starter with a proven track record of working in teams and conducting high-quality work
  • Able to balance multiple tasks, prioritizing effectively to meet deadlines in a fast-paced working environment
  • Interested in the development economics field and/or using research to address policy challenges within YIE’s focus areas
  • Fluency or high proficiency in a local language (Hindi, Assamese, Chhattisgarhi, or Nepali) is desirable

This position will be based at one of our country offices (sites include Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Gwalior, and Kathmandu). Some travel throughout the country can be expected, such as for field visits to rural locations. Dates are flexible, with a minimum eight-week commitment.  Selected candidates will be expected to seek external funding for this position; limited funding (up to $5,000) is available for high quality candidates if funding cannot be obtained.
