Job Purpose

The Principal Investment Specialist will lead BDT, a multi-disciplinary team, which is mandated to address private sector business opportunities that require specialized skills and engagement. The team focuses on the upstream work of creating, incubating and promoting bankable projects across sectors and countries, working with empowered agencies/companies. The team leader also oversees all early-stage developmental initiatives and investments under ADBV, which aims to become a leading regional impact-focused technology investment platform, crowding in more than $1 billion in risk capital by 2030. The incumbent will report to Deputy Director General, PSOD and will supervise international staff, national staff, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities

a. Origination and Processing

  • Leads the development and implementation of early-stage private sector initiatives, platforms, products and projects, comprising (i) the rationale/objective for scaling up early-stage investments (i.e., development impact and financial objectives), including key considerations which would need to be taken into consideration for successful execution; (ii) investment strategy (e.g., key themes, sectors, and markets); (iii) resources required; and (iv) improvements to current operational practices in processing and portfolio management.

  • Leads the identification of opportunities, and provides structuring advice for all early-stage or start-up investments that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific.

  • Supervises the sourcing of new investment opportunities and builds a high-quality investment pipeline, including by leveraging personal networks and relationships.
  • Oversees the evaluation of opportunities for investment, assessment of investment risks, analysis of financial data, and performance of business and investment valuation.
  • Leads and manages the full investment life cycle from due diligence, close process, pre and post funding support to follow-on funding and exit management.
  • Oversees the development of the fund/platform investment strategy, analysis of markets and sectors, and tracking of investment trends and deals.
  • Supervises the supports to portfolio companies on various management, strategy and funding issues.
  • Networks and interacts with governments, agencies, entrepreneurs, advisors, other investors, corporates and other key stakeholders in the Asian start-up ecosystem.
  • Oversees the day-to-day fund/platform operations and administration, including portfolio and impact monitoring and management and investor/donor reporting.

  • Leads the development and implementation of processes for efficient and effective management of funds/platforms, including ADBV.

  • Oversees the fund-raising activities of BDT’s funds/platforms.

b. Knowledge Management

  • Leads in maintaining knowledge of best practices.
  • Overseeing in-house seminars and workshops.
  • Leads the development of briefs, manuals, brochures and other publications related to equity investments.

c. Staff Supervision

  • Provides leadership, supervises the performance, monitors and feedbacks on performance, and ensures on-going learning and development of reporting staff.

Qualifications

Relevant Experience & Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a business or finance related field;

  • At least 12 years of relevant professional work experience in originating, negotiating structuring, executing, and managing equity investments in infrastructure, financial, agriculture, health and/or education sectors;
  • Experience of managing venture capital investments and/or experience as a private equity fund manager would be considered an advantage;
  • International experience working in development in several countries;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
