Responsibilities :

  • The Head of Digital Agriculture will provide scientific leadership in the application of digital innovations for inclusive risk management in smallholder agriculture and food systems and associated economic sectors.
  • Lead user engagement processes that support production systems transition towards more inclusive and more resilient market integration and services based on independent, scientific evidence, including the SERVIR West Africa activity.
  • Provide technical guidance in the use of Earth Observation, IoT, artificial intelligence, value chain and cropping systems models, for more profitable and sustainable smallholder participation in structured agricultural markets.
  • Contribute to on-going research programs in RFFS and WCA around climate information services, crop response to nutrient management, agricultural insurance, adaptation and resilience to climate change, and research on systems design and transformation.
  • Help strengthen and diversify resource mobilization efforts of ICRISAT research programs through a blend of R&D grant writing and private investment.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams from ICRISAT, NARES, development partners (governmental and NGOs), regional organizations, CGIAR Centers and higher education institutions, and the private sector.
  • Together with other RFFS and WCA team members, take part in joint coordination and successfully manage on-going and new research and development projects in WCA and globally.

Qualification:

  • PhD degree or equivalent with 20 years or more of experience in agriculture, agro-ecology, applied remote sensing or similar applied to systems research
  • Experience in the design and implementation of agricultural R&D projects involving the use of digital tools such as crop models, satellite imagery, participatory action research to support decision making across scales.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful and innovative fundraising from international donors.
  • Solid understanding of development pathways, emerging ICT trends, and the role and challenges of the service marketplace (financial, etc.) in de-risking smallholder production systems.
  • Excellent publication record, as evidenced by senior authored research papers in international refereed journals.
  • Experience in working with a wide range of stakeholders and interest to work in a transdisciplinary team.
  • Fully bilingual in English and French, with excellent communication skills.

General :

This is a contractual position for a period of 36 months.
