Jordan is is adversely impacted by climate change, especially the food systems that were already at risk of being unable to sustain the increasing needs and pressures from a growing population. The country has an annual water balance deficit of 20 percent; the deficit is further exacerbated by the huge influx of Syrian refugees and the fluctuation of precipitation trends over the last two decades which was a result of increased climate variability and led to an increase in drought frequencies and severity. According to the Drought Vulnerability Assessment identified the northwest governorates of Ajloun, Irbid and Jerash with higher vulnerability to drought due to their high sensitivity and exposure and the low adaptive capacity. This will ultimately lead to climate displacement towards the capital city of Amman where more water resources are readily secured. The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the food system in Jordan to vulnerability, specifically when the Jordanian government undertook several protective measures such as travel restrictions, curfews, market closures, school suspensions, and work suspensions. This exposed the most vulnerable households, particularly those in the urban centres to food deficit and malnutrition due to food price spikes and competition between refugees and host communities on the scarce food and water resources.

Additionally, the sudden escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine left the whole world’s supply-chains and resources at risk, and Jordan was heavily impacted especially that Jordan is heavily reliant on imported food.  In aim to respond to that context, UNDP under the Green Arab States Facility for Transition (GAFT), with funding from Japan, is commencing one year project to reinvigorate urban agriculture in the capital city of Amman to strengthen the resilience of food systems to unforeseen shocks, whilst delivering national and global environmental benefits, improving the livelihoods of vulnerable households, strengthening social inclusion, and providing a platform for knowledge transfer between the different groups of Amman society.
