PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of Finance is responsible for managing and improving financial and operational administration, planning, and analysis throughout the division and for supporting program development and expansion of revenue-generating activities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Oversee all Health Affairs’ finance and accounting activities, including monthly financial close process, and assure timely and accurate recording of all transactions, maintenance of general ledger, account reconciliations, and preparation of required reports.
  • Produce financial reports and materials, and review and analyze financial results.
  • Present Health Affairs’ financial information to colleagues, organization leaders, Board of Directors/Finance Committee, funders, and others to enable them to effectively understand the division’s financial performance.
  • Budget Management:
    • Drive the process for the preparation of Health Affairs’ annual budgets, budget updates, and budget forecasts.
    • Develop project budgets in conjunction with program staff.
    • Develop, maintain, and improve methods for monitoring year-to-date performance against the overall organizational budget and individual project budgets.
  • Serve as Health Affairs’ “point person” with respect to the procurement and payment policies and procedures:
    • Review and approve all division expenditures as per the procurement and payment policies, including Health Affairs’ employee expense reports.
    • Provide training to Health Affairs staff as needed.
    • Participate in any procurement working groups/committees.
  • Compliance:
    1. Monitor compliance with existing division’s/organization’s accounting policies and procedures, including internal controls; update them as needed.
    2. Ensure financial records comply with accepted policies and procedures, as well as with Project HOPE’s and funders’ financial requirements, including reporting.
    3. Seeks to inform himself/herself about the compliance environment of the job and leads by example as a leader to ensure compliance is top of mind in all dealings.
    4. Ensure all activities for self and others on the team are in alignment with applicable laws, rules and policies.
  • Support the organization’s annual audit and Form 990 preparation, lead preparation of Form 990T, and manage any Health Affairs’ audits/filings.
  • Support Health Affairs’ strategic and business planning:
    • Develop and utilize financial models and processes to measure and evaluate Health Affairs’ financial trajectory in areas of strategic focus to shape insights into revenues and expenses, risks and opportunities, and recommendations;
    • Provide transparency into the financial aspects of business planning and connect Health Affairs’ strategy to financial plans to ensure alignment between targets and priorities; and
    • Help drive process changes and continuous improvements to optimize performance and attain goals.
  • Promote Health Affairs’ revenue-generating activities:
    • Support fundraising activities, including managing proposal budget/budget justification submissions and funder reporting;
    • Conduct new opportunity analyses to help secure and increase revenue sources; and
    • Oversee financial administration of Health Affairs’ revenue sources, including accounting treatment, tracking, and reporting.
  • Proactively build strong connections with colleagues across the organization:
    • Establish and foster relationships with Health Affairs and Project HOPE Finance teams to improve collaboration, cohesiveness, and performance;
    • Work closely with Project HOPE Finance and IT on financial systems administration, including NetSuite;
    • Represent Health Affairs/Finance in cross-organizational working groups; and
    • Consult with IT and HR/Facilities to help ensure smooth functioning of technical systems and physical infrastructure needs for Health Affairs; and participate in legal and grant/contract development and review with an eye toward financial terms and compliance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A strong financial manager who brings best practices to the organization, coupled with a hands-on, “get the job done”, tactical work style.
  • A highly organized, detail-oriented individual with excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • The ability to build strong relationships and work closely with key roles across the organization.
  • Extensive experience with accounting and financial management systems and business operations.
  • Nonprofit audit and tax filing preparation experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years work experience in nonprofit accounting and financial management, with in depth knowledge of GAAP.
  • BA/BS degree required. MBA or master’s degree in public administration, business, finance, or related field and CPA desirable.
  • Minimum of 10 years supervisory experience with the ability to lead, mentor, and develop staff.
  • High proficiency in the use of standard office and accounting software and familiarity with general office operations.
