Avis d’appel d’offres : Fourniture d’une assistance technique au comité restreint de la nutrition à Kiribati.
Kiribati is an independent island nation in the Pacific, consisting of 33 islands, 21 of which are inhabited, with total estimated population of 119,940. The islands are dispersed over 3 million km2 of the Pacific Ocean, with a total land surface area of around 811 km2. The country faces a ‘triple-burden’ of malnutrition, with undernutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight and obesity existing simultaneously within a population, alongside increasing rates of diet-related non-communicable diseases. At 15.2 per cent, Kiribati has a moderate childhood stunting rate while the prevalence of childhood wasting and overweight is at 3.5 per cent and 2.1 per cent respectively. Although recent data on adolescent overweight and obesity is not available, existing data indicates high rates of overweight among adolescents 10-19 years old, with an upwards trend. Similarly, there is no recent data on anaemia, however, data in 2011 indicated that this represented a severe public health issue in Kiribati, affecting 37 per cent of under-5 year olds and 29 per cent of pregnant women. With 34.5 per cent of children aged 6-23 months consuming foods and beverages from two or less food groups out of eight defined during the previous day and 56.2 per cent of children consuming from three or four food groups, UNICEF’s Child Food Poverty report (2022)1 highlighted that 9 out of 10 Kiribati children were living in moderate or severe food poverty.
These staggering statistics drew the attention of Kiribati Government leadership, and the issue was discussed in Parliament in December 2022. Subsequently, a Nutrition Select Committee was formed in Parliament, with a mandate to study the dietary practices and their impacts among the general population, with a special focus on children, review ongoing programmes, and make recommendations on how to improve people’s access to nutritious food. The Committee is expected to submit and table its final report in the Parliament session in August 2023.
UNICEF has been requested to provide technical assistance to enable the Select Committee to perform the above assignment effectively.
