Purpose

Part of the Advisory Services Department (AS) within the Operations Directorate, the Innovation and Digital Finance Advisory (“IDFA”) Division provides upstream, project-related advice to corporates based in the EU on priority RDI projects, aiming to enhance their access to finance, as well as complementing the Bank’s lending and blending activities in the innovation finance field. Notably, IDFA is active in the implementation of the InvestEU Advisory Hub mandate under the RIDSME window and in the delivery of financial advisory PDA for the Innovation Fund.

The division also works on horizontal and thematic activities, such as digitalisation and gender inclusivity in finance, whilst aiming to improve the overall business conditions for corporate promoters to access finance. In continuation of its success with InnovFin Advisory, the division aims to enhance the effectiveness of InvestEU financial products, develop the business case for new financing mechanisms and advise on the set up for new thematic investment platforms / layered funds. Furthermore, the work of the division is instrumental in fostering the development and expansion of its eco-systems such as in quantum, cybersecurity, European security and space.

In this post, you will be entrusted with supporting EU corporates to access financing. You will be in charge of reviewing financial information, evaluating risks as well as recommending areas for improvement, taking into account feedback from other EIB Services where applicable. Moreover, you will also conduct market development and outreach activities, for example through market studies or contributing to external events, so to source and evaluate potential financing and advisory leads in line with the objectives of the InvestEU Advisory Hub mandate.

Operating Network

You will become an active part of the Digital and Space Innovation Finance Advisory Unit, reporting to the Head of Unit directly. Cooperating closely with your colleagues across the Advisory services (AS) Department and within the Operations (OPS) Directorate, you will also have the opportunity to liaise and collaborate with other Directorates of the bank such as Project Directorate (PJ) and Legal Directorate (JU), aiming to ensure that all duties and activities are performed in line with applicable procedures.

Accountabilities

In this position, you will:

  • Source and conduct the initial screening of corporate projects within the innovation Digital area such as Artificial Intelligence, Quantum, Cybersecurity and Space.
  • Evaluate projects presented merits based on their potential for future financing by the Bank, considering key information in terms of economic viability, financial maturity and technical soundness in collaboration with the Bank’s technical services.
  • Provide corporate finance advisory support and recommendations, aiming to assist promoters in preparation for potential financing by the Bank.
  • Where applicable, lead the timely implementation of tailor-made advisory assignments (e.g., set up of Finance Labs), ensuring the effective scoping and budgeting of such efforts, as well as coordinating with other Services to procure external support, if required.
  • Perform a wide range of Financial advisory tasks including, amongst others, performing bankability assessments, providing advice on business and financial plans’ strength, as well as guidance on financing structures, market analyses and the development of financial models. You will also be steering discussions about business development and corporate strategy, at times working with external consultants. Such activities should contribute to the Bank’s operational pipeline, helping corporates to prepare for financing or address known bankability issues. Your tasks will also include drafting internal and external documentation including clear and concise project reports.
  • Contribute to building IDFA’s network and ecosystem, helping to harness and grow the team’s knowledge and expertise in financing digital and space innovation. Also, you will also work to ensure that the unit stays abreast of best practices, as well as represent IDFA and the Bank in external events as required.
  • Where relevant, contribute to assessing financing bottlenecks and/or market inefficiencies identified via the advisory activities conducted, and also more generally through the wider digital and space related work of IDFA.
  • Proactively develop business relations with key external parties (e.g. European Commission, project promoters, investors, financial institutions, government representatives, local authorities, other EU institutions, etc.), in order to successfully deploy the Bank’s advisory offering under InvestEU, aiming to generate future financing or mandate opportunities for the Bank in the digital and space areas.
  • Support knowledge sharing and teamwork within the Division, the Advisory Services Department as a whole, whilst also aiming to originate advisory assignments for corporate counterparts, that will contribute to the lending pipeline.
  • Represent IDFA in internal Working Groups and Committees as required.

Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant field of studies such as Business Administration, Finance, Economics or STEM subjects furthered by relevant postgraduate studies in finance.
  • Minimum of five 5 years relevant professional experience with transaction experience gained in lending, financial advisory and/or investment firms.
  • Experience in financing operations. Proven experience in corporate finance, infrastructure finance, and/or structured finance would be considered as a significant advantage.
  • Experience in commercial or business development activities, driving origination and evaluation of financial leads, would be an advantage.
  • Relevant experience or knowledge about several of the following would be considered an advantage: (i) business / financial planning, (ii) risk management, (iii) financial structuring and/or advising on structured or project finance operations, (iv) product or business development in structured or project finance and/or climate-related themes and projects
  • Strong analytical skills paired with sound judgment and the ability to propose constructive solutions to potential complex issues in terms of project development, bankability and policy dialogues.
  • Demonstrated interest in following innovation trends in both the public and private sectors.
  • Proven experience in successfully managing projects in a multicultural professional environment, collaborating effectively across organisational lines, as well as the ability to work simultaneously on multiple activities.
  • Good command of standard computer tools (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (*), with a good command of the other. Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.
