We envisage that this role will work part time (40-60%), however we will consider proposals from candidates for alternative working arrangements.
The role will be based in one of BBC Media Action’s offices in Africa, Asia or London. Applications are welcome from anyone with the existing right to work in any of those countries. The successful applicant will be employed and based in their home country.
Specific job responsibilities and accountabilities
- Improve the quality of projects that BBC Media Action delivers by developing and articulating evidence-based strategies and approaches and providing expert advice on how the organisation can be innovative and achieve impact on gender equality and social inclusion.
- Work closely with BBC Media Action teams to improve the quality of project delivery, research and evidence generation and learning around gender equality and social inclusion, e.g. building staff and partner capacity to apply GESI tools and approaches.
- Play a lead role identifying and engaging with influential external stakeholders about the potential of media and communication in these areas. This will involve representing BBC Media Action externally (through high-level meetings and public presentations), forging relationships with major external partners, stakeholders and funding bodies and supporting business development to articulate BBC Media Action’s offer.
- Ensure the best learning, research and technical advice is made available across the organisation, prioritised according to need. This will include capacity strengthening, ensuring relevant expertise is available to country teams, publishing insights from organisational practice and evolving the organisation’s approaches in these areas.
- Support and where appropriate guide the development of external international donor and other business development relationships specific to one or more of the organisation’s thematic portfolios, exploring and generating business development opportunities, and supporting, and when relevant directing, the development of cross institutional proposals specific to the theme.
- Support the development and delivery of an evidence generation strategy sufficient to improve the organisation’s reputation within specific thematic areas for its own evidence and impact, as well as the broader reputation of the role of communication. This will involve working with Researchers.
- Support the organisation’s external evidence-based policy engagement in this field. This will involve building the institutional reputation of the organisation and its influence in deploying its own experience, insight and evidence to inform and help shape donor and development strategies in one or more of the organisation’s focus areas.
Skills, knowledge and experience requirements
- Strong experience, knowledge and a proven reputation in the field of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion.
- A proven capability in business development relevant to this field and in the formation of external institutional and professional relationships with donors and other development actors in the field.
- Leadership experience.
- Excellent communication and writing skills.
- A relevant post graduate qualification or demonstrable record in delivering relevant projects, research or learning.
- The ability to work effectively across teams and to mobilise resources to achieve impact.
- Ability and willingness to travel as required to deliver the job.
- Knowledge and understanding of how media and communication can achieve impact on gender equality and social inclusion.
- Capacity to exercise intellectual leadership on gender equality and social inclusion and experience of engaging with relevant external research, practice and policy agendas at a high level, linking these creatively to the programming and thinking of BBC Media Action.
- Extensive contacts and high-level networking ability within the fields of gender equality and social inclusion.
- Extensive experience of working with media and communication for development among individuals, households and communities.
- Strong understanding of the international development system, particularly in relation to marginalised groups.
- Experience delivering work that supports gender equality and social inclusion.
- Experience building capacity among staff and partners to improve gender equality and social inclusion.
