About the opportunity
RI invests in four broad program sectors: Health; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH); Economic Opportunity; and Education; while integrating protection, climate change, conflict mitigation, and utilization of cash modality in partnership with the communities we serve.
Climate change is dramatically impacting our world. Changing weather patterns are affecting
rain patterns, food production, and extreme weather events are gaining in frequency and intensity. The WASH Director will lead a highly collaborative process, to implement RI’s Water Security, Sanitation and Hygiene vision, strategy and theory of change.
Key Responsibilities
Vision & Strategy
- Against the backdrop of climate change, armed conflict, and acute onset disasters, you will drive the development and support implementation of RI’s Water Security, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) vision strategy/theory of change.
New Business Development
- Lead and support WASH program design. Support new business development, most notably for donors spanning bilateral (governments), multilateral (UN and EU), Foundations and Corporations, with an eye towards facilitating public-private partnerships.
RI’s WASH Capacity
- Build RI’s on-the-ground capacity to deliver quality and holistic WASH programming , through the use of innovative and entrepreneurial solutions to complex problems.
- Work through and with host-country government WASH service s, local and industry standards.
Representation & Engagement | Telling our Story
- Share RI ’s accomplishments, internally and externally.
- Plan for WASH-specific and multi-sectoral evaluations.
- Lead representation and engagement efforts in partnership with internal and external stakeholders .
- Provide thought leadership in leading WASH networks.
Value-Added Partnerships
- Explore, lead, and facilitate value-added partnerships – at global, regional, and country levels.
- Serve as RI’s spokesperson on Water Security, Sanitation, and Hygiene and develop entrepreneurial partnerships with the private sector .

- Uphold and promote RI’s commitment to ensuring the safeguarding and safety of the vulnerable communities we serve.

About you
- Deep contextual understanding of the places RI works and the partners ;
- Unsurpassed communication and presentation skills (written and verbal);
- Kindness, humility, and compassion;
- Master’s degree in engineering and a background in environmental science, business management concerning water and sanitation, or similar field or equivalent experience;
- Successful professional experience in the WASH sector working on donor-funded projects; including experience in fragile countries;
- Previous experience in successfully supporting and managing WASH project teams on full project cycle technical needs;
- Demonstrated understanding and experience with EU, US, UN and other public and private donors desirable;
- Track record of achievement developing winning bid packages for large scale projects;
- Excellent communication skills, and ability to work virtually with team members spread out around the world;
- Must be comfortable as a spokesperson for RI, representing RI with donors, partners, and key networks;
- Ability and interest in traveling to support country offices.
