J-PAL Africa is pleased to announce the opening of its 2020 internship programme. This programme is primarily targeted at South African Honours and Masters Economics students writing their thesis or research paper, but students in their final year of undergraduate study and recent graduates will also be considered. This position is paid, and the successful candidate(s) are expected to work part time from July to November 2020. Given restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the internship programme will take place remotely, partially or in full.

The Intern will likely participate in one of our active research projects but depending on their profile and aspirations, may also be involved in Policy team activities. This role provides an excellent opportunity to work at the frontier of rigorous research and evidence-based policymaking, contributing to knowledge that can improve the lives of citizens in South Africa and beyond.

 

Responsibilities may include, depending on project selected:

  • Contributing to study design by conducting literature reviews or performing formative data analysis for PI teams
  • Supporting the Research Associates and Research Manager in data collection and analysis, for example programming surveys, performing back-checks and writing code for data cleaning processes
  • Assisting Principal Investigator teams in identifying funding opportunities for ongoing projects and answering funding proposals

Required

  • Demonstrated quantitative skills, and proficiency in Stata or R and Microsoft Office suite
  •  Good oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Creative and effective problem-solver
  • Familiarity with and interest in randomised evaluations and experimental methods
  • Right to work in South Africa (citizenship, permanent residency or critical skills visa). Please note that J-PAL Africa cannot sponsor work permits.
  • Highly Advantageous
  • Honours degree in Economics or Econometrics
  • Full or partial completion of a J-PAL online courses: edX 101x: Evaluating Social Programs and edX 102x: Designing and Running Randomised Evaluations, MITx Micromasters in Data, Economics, and Development Policy (DEDP)
  • Experience with data cleaning, merging and management using Stata/R programming.
  • Survey programming experience in SurveyCTO or equivalent.
