Background and Rationale :

In September 2017, the EU and the UN launched a joint partnership to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls worldwide. The Spotlight Initiative (SI) aims to mobilize commitment of political leaders and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Initiative aims at ending all forms of violence against women and girls, targeting those that are most prevalent and contribute to gender inequality across the world. The Spotlight Initiative deploys targeted, large-scale investments in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific and the Caribbean, aimed at achieving significant improvements in the lives of women and girls. Zimbabwe is one of the eight countries in Africa to benefit from this transformative initiative.

 

SI VISION IN ZIMBABWE :

The overall vision of the Spotlight Initiative in Zimbabwe is that women and girls realize their full potential in a violence-free, gender-responsive and inclusive Zimbabwe. The Spotlight Initiative is directly contributing to Zimbabwe’s achievement of three of the country’s prioritized Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 5 on Gender Equality, Goal 3 on good health and well-being and Goal 16 on inclusive and peaceful societies. The programme contributes to the elimination of SGBV and HPs through the creation of a broad partnership with Civil Society, Government, Private Sector, Media, among others; and, build a social movement of women, men, girls and boys as champions and agents of change at the national, subnational and community levels. A specific focus is on reaching and including in the programme women and girls who are often isolated and most vulnerable to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Harmful Practices (HPs) due to intersecting forms of discrimination. The programme also seeks to address the SRHR needs of all women and girls using a life-cycle approach.

The SI Zimbabwe Country Programme uses a multi-sectoral, multi-layered, interlinked community-centered approach to the implementation of the interventions on the following six Outcome Areas based on the socio-ecological model for addressing SGBV and HPs :

  • Legislative and Policy Frameworks ;
  • Strengthening Institutions ;
  • Prevention and Social Norms ;
  • Delivery of Quality, Essential Services ;
  • Data Availability and Capacities ;
  • Supporting the Women’s Movement.

UNICEF works heavily under Outcome 4 of the Spotlight Initiative to improve the delivery of quality, essential services. In light of COVID19 and the serious implications the national lockdown has had on GBV1, UNICEF is committed to ensuring that UNICEF and partners deliver innovative solutions to strengthen availability, accessibility and quality of GBV response services.

WORKASSIGNMENTS :

The User Research Consultant will be responsible for :

  • Designing and conducting user research ;
  • Identifying the best methods based on research goals and resources in Zimbabwe ;
  • All aspects of research (planning, recruiting, moderation, analysis, reporting) for both generative (participatory design) and evaluative (usability testing) research

The User Research Consultant must :

  • Develop budget and the research road-map for user experience research in across specified regions in Zimbabwe ;
  • Lead the human centered design process to effectively derive insights from service providers who will be using the eRPW and the various stakeholders involved in the process in close collaboration with UNICEF Country Office, GBV Interagency Coordination lead and partners ;
  • Combine qualitative and quantitative methods (e.g., conducting interviews, focus groups, survey sampling and design, and experimental design) ;
  • Translate research into actionable design and product results ;
  • Combine qualitative research and user-centered design methods, including but not limited to concept-testing, competitor analysis, diary studies, contextual inquiry/observations, or ethnography. Motivated to use creative but rigorous qualitative research methods with expert facilitation skills ;
  • Enhance our understanding of the needs of GBV coordinators and service providers through application of appropriate research methodologies such as customer journey maps, user segmentation, creation of personas, and usability testing ;
  • Conduct user research at all stages from discovery to validation, using a variety of methods to understand the participants and their relationship to our products ;
  • Translate research findings into clear insights, durable frameworks, and actionable recommendations to guide product development. Communicate findings and illustrate suggestions in compelling and creative ways ;
  • Create user personas ;
  • Lead design sprints to turn HCD insights into actionable points ;
  • Identify capacity building needs of end users of the application ;
  • Identify level of digital divide locally through consultations with local service providers and make recommendations ;
  • Work closely with software developer to translate needs identified into technical requirements.

Take ownership of product user experiences, providing feedback on style guides that enable designers, developers, and product managers to effectively build intuitive and beautiful products

Required qualifications, expertise, technical background and experience of the International Consultant :

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Anthropology, human-computer interaction, psychology or a related field or equivalent practical experience desirable ;
  • 4-5 years consumer researcher experience, including end-to-end research experience with various methods (e.g., interviews, usability testing, contextual inquiry, surveys, concept testing), with experience conducting both qualitative and quantitative research ;
  • 3+ years of UX research experience across early stages of product development ;
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and UX best practices ;
  • Prior experience working on GBV and/or gender projects ;
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset ;
  • Fluency in English is required. Fluency in Shona or Ndebele is preferred.
