Background :
Vaccination has been identified as an additional tool towards ending the acute phase of the COVID 19 pandemic by 2021. To enable access the covid-19 vaccine, COVAX facility has been established to pool demand and resources to ensure that low income and lower-middle income economies including Kenya, as well as other IDA-eligible economies, have access to COVID-19 vaccines at the same time as wealthier economies. Kenya has applied to the Covax facility and is in the process of placing vaccine request to Gavi under the Covax AMC Instrument.
To ensure the National Immunization program is prepared for the vaccine introduction, several activities should be completed as outlined in the Vaccine and Immunization readiness assessment tool (VRAT). As part of the country preparedness towards the introduction of the COVID 19 vaccine in the coming few months, Kenya needs to urgently identify and address gaps in the immunization program within a very short time.
