Background/IRC Summary:
Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee and immigrant youth and their communities in New York City. The Education and Learning Program provides year-round programming working directly with refugee and immigrant youth, their parents and families, and their schools.
Job Overview/Summary:
The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy is a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived immigrant youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social emotional learning classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.
The Operations Associate will work closely with the Dean of Operations to ensure the smooth daily operation of the Newcomer Summer Academy. The Operations Associate will provide administrative and logistical support related to special events, arrival and dismissal, attendance, student transportation, and meals.
Position Term:
June 14 – August 27, 2021
Hours:
Prior to program: 18 hours/week, hours flexible
Training: June 30, July 1; 9am-5pm. Additional online training modules to be completed independently.
Program: July 6 – August 13, 8am-4pm
Major Responsibilities:
Participate in All Staff training, and all program meetings and staff development activities thereafter.
Program coordination assistance:
Assist with logistics of whole school community building events and field trips; including staff communications, purchasing and travel
Enforce student attendance policies and procedures and attendance tracking
Facilitate student arrival and dismissal, following policies and procedures
Maintain supply inventories during the Academy
Prepare purchase vouchers and process receipts
Assist with meal administration, ensuring adherence to regulations
Assist with logistics for special events including graduation or donor visits
Assist with Metro Card distribution and tracking
Play lead staff role with one field trip group each Friday
Assist Dean of Operations with technological support to instructional staff and students, including managing and securing all IRC devices as well as liaising with school staff regarding Department of Education devices (smartboards, projectors, printers, copiers etc.) Assisting students access online resources and platforms.
Address student medical needs in conjunction with Dean of Student Support
Act as a positive role model for students and staff
Take on special projects or support roles as needed
Manage the main office in absence of the Dean of Operations
Assist Dean of Operations in supporting Peer Mentors
Other tasks and duties as assigned
Profil
Job Requirements:
Undergraduate coursework or completed degree, preferably with a concentration in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Education or Business Operations
Experience working with youth and/or immigrant populations
Strong interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
Cross-cultural or overseas experience preferred
Proficiency with Microsoft computer applications and internet research
Close attention to detail, ability to quickly adapt to new technological systems
Ability to take initiative and problem-solve effectively in high stress and fast-paced situations
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Spanish, French, Pashto, Fulani, Wolof, Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Mandingo, Haitian Creole, Nepali, Garifuna, Mam, Tigrinya)
