SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The Western States Advocacy Team seeks a research and policy intern to assist with advocacy work. Interns will be exposed to a variety of policy areas related to the resettlement and integration of refugees and immigrants, including digital opportunity efforts, ensuring educational equity, and general social services provision. While the interns’ focus will be on Utah and/or Nevada politics, there will be moments of overlap with federal immigration policy.
COMMITMENT:May 3rd to August 20th 2021, 15-20 hours per week – Intern must be available to work 3-4 full days per week.
Profil
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist with researching, writing, and otherwise developing state policies that impact IRC clients (education, language access, digital inclusion, employment, food security, etc.)
• Assist with facilitating stakeholder and coalitional engagement on policy development efforts
• Assist with the development of messaging strategies, materials, and trainings
• Attend and take notes on virtual interim committee meetings and other scheduled meetings with elected officials
• Contribute to advocacy targeting and engagement plans.
• Assist with Utah and Nevada’s response to federal priorities and other digital advocacy efforts as needed
• Other duties and tasks as assigned
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Will gain unique experience conducting research and analysis for policy and advocacy aims
2. Will gain experience with advocacy coordination on calls with NGOs, legislators, and other partners
3. Will gain experience writing with an advocacy focus
4. Will learn about administrative and legislative advocacy processes and opportunities
5. Will have the opportunity to observe and interact with different NGO partners and coalitions
6. Will have the opportunity to network within the NGO community
7. Will learn about core elements of the U.S. local policymaking process, the roles of various parties in crafting policy, and the IRC’s issue areas
8. Will learn about process of coordinating advocacy across a large international NGO
REQUIREMENTS:
• Students beginning their postgraduate education or highly qualified students completing their junior or senior year of their Bachelor’s degree are welcome to apply. Relevant areas of study include, but are not limited to, political science, international affairs, international development, sociology, American studies, and public administration, with relevant coursework on refugee or immigration topics.
• General understanding of state and local politics – experience with the Utah or Nevada State Legislature a plus
• Strong writing, editing, and research skills – experience utilizing the American Community Survey or similar publicly available database (New American Economy, Migration Policy Institute Resources) a plus
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize various tasks in a fast-paced work environment
• Ability to work productively in a team environment as well as independently
• Legal research and analysis skills are a plus
• Data visualization and graphic design skills are a plus
This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
