icddr,b invites applications from suitable candidates for the position of Deputy Project Coordinator with Maternal and Child Nutrition program under the Nutrition and Clinical Services Division. The appointment will be made on a Fixed Term basis for 1 year which is renewable depending on performance and availability of funds.
Position description
The project will produce data to evaluate the efficacy of the program in terms of reducing the prevalence of LBW among pregnant mothers who have purchased and consumed the MMS as per guidance. The position will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating the program implementation team, planning and implementing research projects; and identification of threats to the activity validity. She/ he will report to the scientist.
The Deputy Project Coordinator will be responsible for:
- To lead a team of investigators and staff to conduct an evaluation assessment of a business-model intervention project in five divisions across Bangladesh.
- To ensure staff capacity through training, monitoring for ethical, standard and quality data collection throughout the project.
- To set short term work plans and long-term goals for performance, strategize about how to meet the goals and monitor performance towards reaching the overall project goals. Organize training/orientations to implement improvements to standard operating procedures (SOP) as needed to increase the capacity of the teams to perform activities/research in the government hospitals as well as in the communities.
- To analyze data from study and intervention activities and publish in the peer-reviewed literature.
- To build up the public Health Management and Leadership capacity to GO/NGO health officials through training and mentoring
- To coordinate with other multi-disciplinary teams on the project and government counterparts to meet the project objectives and ensure data are used for public health action, within the guidelines of the Maternal and Child Nutrition Division and organizational values.
Duties and responsibilities
Activity management and coordination
- Assist in creating detailed activity plans covering milestones, deliverables etc.
- Coordinate with data management focal persons at different levels to systematically collect, validate and analyze data from the field team. Relaying the information for further programmatic implementation;
- Oversee the development and implementation of the performance monitoring plan to capture program performance and results including routine reporting and all monitoring for process and outcome evaluations;
- Work with program and financial team to prepare and track the progress of program and activity according to the budget;
- Undertake regular monitoring and technical support visits to the field sites across Bangladesh to assess progress against the approved plan;
- Work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and the donor representative to conduct regular project reviews, Midterm reviews, and final evaluation;
- Conduct implementation analysis to oversee changes in program implementation, identification of low-performing areas, and developing course corrective strategies.
- Supervise data collection, coach staff on how to address issues faced during field-work, monitor quality of data collected, and response rates against timelines and program criteria;
- Take corrective actions to comply with donor mandates and activity protocols;
- Coordinate all financial functions (e.g. tracking budgets and expenditure, creating financial reports) between donors, partner organizations and icddr,b with regards to project grants;
- Cooperate with the PI and donor representative in activity update with adherence to quality standards and timelines.
The specific areas of responsibilities are detailed below:
Activity implementation and monitoring
- Brainstorm activity ideas with the team and develop quality proposals;
- Edit and amend the data collection tools articulated by the team;
- Work to develop system documentation
- Create detailed activity design and methodology to achieve the objectives;
- Coordinate the monitoring and evaluation component of the program
- Undertake regular monitoring and technical support visits to the activity sites and divisional offices to assess progress against approved plan;
Activity evaluation, data management and reporting
- Provide oversight and technical assistance to staff members of the team to enable routine tracking and dissemination of set indicators as per approved plan;
- Coordinate implementation of electronic and paper-based data and information management systems across the project partners;
- Document and disseminate program successes and challenges to the stakeholders;
- Develop and oversee data flow patterns for programs that will ensure timely data collection and reporting;
- Lead timely reporting to the donor by providing documentation activities and indicator results for progress and annual reports, as required;
- Ensure quality of data through data verification procedures including routine data quality audits;
- Ensure that donor reports are prepared regularly as per donor requirements.
Leadership management
- Provide leadership and direction on implementing monitoring and evaluation plan of the activity to ensure the program achieves its goals, objectives, and targets;
- Drive the development, implementation, and ongoing review of the program’s monitoring and evaluation and contribute to other key program deliverables;
- Provide oversight and technical assistance to staff members to enable routine tracking and dissemination of set indicators as per the approved plan.
Coordination
- Identify the relevant government and non-government bodies/ collaborators/ partners for liaising;
- Develop professional relations with identified agencies and their personnel;
- Organize routine meetings and discussion sessions with the stakeholders;
- Build long-term relationships with key functionaries;
- Develop a viable partnership with the stakeholders;
- Represent the organization in various national level forums;
- Participate in meetings/conferences conducted by government authorities and institutional partners to strengthen and effectively implement the research activities as per plan.
People management
- Interview candidates and make hiring recommendations if required;
- Promote a spirit of collegiality and gender diversity amongst team members and in the organization;
- Encourage team members to collaborate across areas;
- Address and resolve any diversity-related issues;
- Set goals and conduct appraisals for the team;
- Set high standards and confront poor performance where needed;
- Mentor young professionals and prepare them for higher responsibilities;

- Take appropriate actions to manage poor performance (such as creating Performance Improvement Plans, coaching, job rotations, planning separations from icddr,b).
Required experience and qualifications**
Education:
Master’s in Public Health with MBBS degree from a reputed Medical College recognized by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) with good academic records.
Experience:
Over 10 years of experience in the field of Maternal and Child Nutrition. Experience in child development and implementation research for at least 3 years will receive priority.
