CONTEXT :
The Communication & Fundraising department counts 14 people. Its mission is to inform the Belgian public, institutions, media and donors about Handicap International’s work and the values we defend. The department also raises private funds to enable H.I.’s social mission.
The press officer works in collaboration with other colleagues from the communication & fundraising department (copywriter, digital officer, marketing…), the Federal Communication Directorate (DCC) at the same time as colleagues from the other national associations (AN). A collaboration with the other sectors of the Brussels Operational Center is also necessary to guarantee a logical coherence in all external communication.
DESCRIPTION :
The press officer contributes to develop H.I. notoriety and to raise awareness by acting as one of HIB’s spokespersons and by developing external communications to give HI’s operations visibility in the Belgian media, mainly in Flanders.
Task 1 – Develop and implement all necessary actions to bring Handicap International’s work and message to the attention of the Belgian media in Flanders:
• Gather all relevant information, both from the various departments at Brussels Office and from colleagues in other countries. To this end, the Press Officer will work closely with the Federal Communication Officers and attend relevant meetings as necessary. He will act as an important interface between the Communication Department and the other departments and units at Brussels office (optimizing internal info-flow).
• Do all necessary media work to inform the Belgian Flemish public and media about the work of HI (writing/translating press releases, organizing press conferences and briefings, disseminating relevant information, identifying spokespersons, preparing experts at HI for media interviews…).
• HI’s spokesperson in the Flemish speaking Belgian media
• Development and maintaining a network of local, regional and national contacts with Belgian journalists who are expected to understand the work of HI.
• Development and maintaining a database with Belgian Flemish media contacts.
• Mission on the field according to the needs (press visits).
Task 2 – Analyze the presence of HI in the Belgian Flemish media:
• Development and maintaining a database regarding HI presence in Belgian Flemish media.
• Analysis and reporting of all data.
• Follow-up of operational parameters and KPI’s.
Task 3 – Ambassadors & influencers:
• You are the contact person for our good-will ambassadors, you keep them informed about possible collaborations, campaigns & events
• You insure the visibility of the ambassadors in all H.I. media and that the ambassadors give visibility to HI messages & campaigns in their own communication channels.
Task 4 – Influencers & new media
• You explore the possibilities to communicate about H.I. in new communities (YouTube channels, Instagram, …)
• You manage the collaboration with influencers and create a community of influencers
• Creation and follow-up of a database of contacts.
Task 5 – Support to the other team members, according to the needs:
• Support for specific projects, campaigns or events (when press is required).
• Key messages wording for HI’s campaigns & events.
• Back-up for the Dutch copywriter if needed (mailings, magazines, newsletter, website,..)
PROFIL:
• University or college degree. Specialization in Communications or Journalism.
• Min. 2 years of demonstrable experience as a press officer or journalist
• The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, who has an excellent pen and perfect knowledge of Dutch.
• Fluent knowledge of French and English is a must.
• Excellent knowledge of the Belgian Dutch speaking media (both national and regional).
• Good knowledge MS Office tools (Excel – Word – Powerpoint – Outlook),
• Use of the Adobe tools is a real advantage
• Good knowledge Social media world: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube
• Ability to work independently and quickly against short deadlines, stress resistant, meticulous with attention to detail, analytical mind, diplomatic and team player.
• Experience in the humanitarian world is a plus.
• Available to travel abroad for short missions.
