Okapi Consulting is an innovative organization that promotes the role of the media in peacebuilding. Based in South Africa, Okapi Consulting implements the Radio Ndarason Internationale (RNI) project, a regional network of radio stations broadcasting around the Lake Chad Basin on shortwave and FM in Kanuri, Kanembou and Boudouma with studios set up in N’Djamena (Chad), Maiduguri (Nigeria) and Diffa (Niger). The establishment of an office and studio in Maroua (Cameroon) is imminent. RNI encourages a constructive dialogue for peace and development in this region.

As part of the development of Radio Ndarason Internationale (RNI), Okapi Consulting is recruiting a country director for the management of the office in Maroua (Cameroon). It is a national position.

Mission :

The Country Director is, in collaboration with the regional team, responsible for the overall leadership and management of RNI Cameroon, including overseeing the management of programs, partners and government relations, financial and material resources, and staff. Tasks also include program development, capacity building and building networks of local staff and partners, and representing RNI across the country. The position will ensure optimal strategic direction and achievement of program objectives for RNI and its partners, adherence to RNI and donor program quality standards as well as administrative and financial requirements of RNI, donors and the host country.

He/She will collaborate with the Regional Coordinator based in N’Djamena (Chad) to run Radio Ndarason Internationale (RNI) in Maroua.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the monitoring and coordination of all Okapi activities in Cameroon
  • Provide dynamic and inspiring leadership to all Okapi staff in Cameroon
  • Develop and maintain relationships with funders, ministries, other radio stations and key stakeholders
  • Ensure that all financial, administrative, operational and human resources tasks are carried out in accordance with Okapi’s policies, donor requirements, and as required by local and national regulations
  • Make day-to-day decisions regarding Okapi’s activities in Cameroon and establish clear and effective communication with the hierarchy to resolve issues with significant operational or strategic implications
  • Engage in the monitoring and evaluation aspects of the programme, and ensure at least once a month that relevant indicators are implemented at each stage of the project, and for each radio programme
  • Liaise on a day-to-day basis with RNI Chad, Niger and Nigeria and work with Okapi Consulting’s headquarters in South Africa to identify, mitigate and avoid risks to our reputation, financial resilience and/or ability to deliver the project in Cameroon through the use of foresight, strategic judgment and risk analysis
  • Take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of all personnel, consultants and other persons, and immediately notify Okapi’s headquarters, and act in the event of a threat to the safety of persons connected in any way with Okapi, RNI, or related projects:
  • Conduct fundraising, networking and business development activities for Okapi in Cameroon
  • Is prepared to take on new challenges and responsibilities as needed.

Profile :

  • Have a minimum level of Bac+3 in international development, international relations, communication, journalism or a related field;
  • Have at least 10 years of experience working in a similar position, preferably in an international organization.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, systems thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to see the big picture and the ability to exercise judgment and make informed decisions.
  • Have very good relationship management skills. Ability to build relationships with people at all levels, internally and externally.  Team leadership abilities. Strong communication and presentation skills. Proactive, resourceful, solution-oriented and results-oriented.
  • Experience in MS Office package (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio), web conferencing applications, and information and budget management systems.
  • Fluent in French and English.
