News Assistant, New York Times Andes Bureau
The New York Times seeks a New Assistant for its Andes Bureau, based in Bogotá, Colombia.
The News Assistant will play a critical support role, aiding reporters living and traveling in Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and beyond.
We seek candidates with excellent organizational and communication skills who enjoy solving difficult logistical problems in high-speed environments.
The News Assistant will have a broad range of responsibilities, including:

Filing expenses and paying freelancers.

Obtaining and managing newsroom equipment and tools, including office supplies, safety equipment and communication tools like internet, cell phones, SIM cards and satellite phones.

Arranging safe travel for reporters, obtaining flights, drivers, lodging and local currency, often at the last minute, often to difficult-to-reach places.

Assisting reporters in obtaining visas and travel permits, often at the last minute, often in challenging circumstances.

Requesting and obtaining access in difficult-to-reach locations.

Identifying sources and scheduling interviews.

Conducting research and initial interviews and writing memos.

Assisting reporters in the field.
Skills Required

Fluent English and Spanish, written and spoken.

Meticulous organizational skills; ability to prioritize with strong attention to detail.

Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
-
Ability to deal with all levels of management and staff in a highly professional manner.

Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality is a must.

An appreciation of The Times culture and commitment to journalistic ethics.

Good general computer and tech skills are a must, including experience with Google Docs, Excel, email and video chat programs.

Excellent troubleshooting skills.
