POSITION SUMMARY:
HIAS seeks a cultural navigator consultant within the Central Africa refugee community, to support the design, start up and initial components of a US Program focused on gender, protection from gender-based violence and empowerment of survivors and communities after resettlement.
Primary responsibilities will be to advise the Program Specialist and the GBV Consultant to adapt and design culturally appropriate models of engagement that center the experiences of women, girls and LGBTQI+ from the chosen communities. Cultural navigators will assist with listening sessions to inform program design, and engage relevant stakeholders such as ethnic community leaders and service providers.
At HIAS, Social Integration programming includes mental health and psychosocial care and with this, a focus on GBV. As we expand our reach across the network to improve the well-being of vulnerable refugee populations to recover from the shock of displacement and integrate into their new communities in the U.S, so we must ensure GBV knowledge is at the forefront.
Please note, this is a part-time consultancy. Consultants must be based remotely in the United States, and we are hiring one Central Africa consultant.
OBJECTIVES & DELIVERABLES:
- Support or coach affiliate partners with specific tasks like, listening sessions, or needs assessments with specific refugee communities (Central Africa) communities centering discussions with women and adolescent girls to identify the risks of GBV, community responses and recommendations.
- Participate in up to 5 meetings as an advisory member to provide recommendations and advise on specific cultural consideration for GBV response and prevention efforts
- helping identify culturally adapted models and group curriculum for engaging women and girls in safe spaces, GBV awareness raising and psychosocial support.
- Support the identification of culturally and linguistically relevant community social networks, training and capacity building of community members and referral pathways for GBV survivors.
- Engage and advocate with members of social services, and community and religious leaders.
- Offer content review and cultural recommendations and overall support for affiliate-facing suite of materials including assessment, outreach, information, education and communication tools.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS :
- Lived experience as a refugee or immigrant strongly preferred.
- Preferred experience with refugee resettlement case management, women’s rights organizations, or community- based organizations.
- Willing to attend training on international best practices, ensuring on best approaches to translate practices into cultural context working with individuals and groups.
- Must be committed to supporting survivors of gender-based violence, demonstrate survivor-centered attitudes, and follow GBV guiding principles (survivor’s rights to confidentiality, safety, respect and self -determination, and non-discrimination).
- Literacy and computer skills in English and a relevant refugee language required.
