World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a Remote Sensing and Ecoinformatics Lead to join its Global Science team.

Help WWF revolutionize the way we build software for conservation, including ecosystem service modeling. The Remote Sensing and Ecoinformatics Lead will work with the Global Science team and the WWF network to develop and maintain software tools to accelerate conservation science. The Remote Sensing and Ecoinformatics Lead will have broad experience with software architecture and development, machine-learning and data science, cloud-based computing, and geospatial modeling. Understanding of conservation issues on global and local scales is an asset, as is experience working with multiple organizations to co-develop science and software tools to accelerate that science. The key roles of the Remote Sensing and Ecoinformatics Lead are to facilitate data processing for modeling, support the Biodiversity Lead Scientist in developing new methodologies and systems, and maintain and develop software to achieve conservation science goals.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and application of software tools with the WWF Biodiversity Lead Scientist, other WWF scientists, and program managers.
  • Perform analyses for select projects; apply advanced geospatial analysis and programming as necessary for ecosystem service modeling and other analyses at landscape to global scales.
  • Develop new analytical and data science techniques including machine learning and natural language processing to support science needs within the Global Science team and WWF network.
  • Maintain software repositories (e.g., Google Earth Engine, GitHub) by keeping software up to date. Maintain knowledge of other data platforms, including cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and cloud-based relational databases for use as needed.
  • Keep abreast of developments in data analysis and open-source tools for analysis and data visualization (e.g. D3.js, QGIS).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years professional software development experience with an advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, data science or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in software programming languages such as C++, Python, and Java.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based technologies for data analysis.
  • Experience building geospatial software tools for conservation, biodiversity and ecosystem services modeling.
  • Experience using machine learning and other data science analytical techniques to create new predictive models integrate satellite observations with other data sources.
  • Solid project management skills with the ability to produce high quality work under time constraints.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills requiring knowing when to use courtesy, tact and/or diplomacy to effectively communicate with all constituents.
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity in deliverables, behavior, and demeanor.
  • Ability to show respect for the organization, the work, the team, and self.
