This position is located in the United Nations Global Compact Office (UNGCO) in New York.
The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) is the United Nations’ voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas. The Global Compact Office is the United Nations’ entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and collective action in support of the United Nations, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The incumbent reports to the Senior Programme Officer, Participant Relations.
Within limits of delegated authority, the Programme Officer, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), will be responsible for the following duties:
• Participates in leading the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes/projects related to SMEs, by providing thought leadership for key initiatives, e.g., Academy Learning experiences, Peer Learning groups, Regional Exchanges, additional materials for Supply Chain Pilots etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
• Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
• Provides SME-related thought leadership to all UNGC program development and delivery, advising programmes team, local networks and Global Operations team, marketing and communications.
• Partners with fundraising teams to secure funding to develop and deliver the SME strategy and plans.
• Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources such as sustainability trends, policy changes impacting SMEs globally, etc.
• Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
• Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions by developing and analyzing Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) data on SME progress, through global Communications on Progress (COP) and in country specific Supply Chain Pilots.
• Prepares various written outputs, e.g., draft background papers, analyses, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
• Provides substantive support to United Nations Global Compact Office meetings, conferences, etc. and relevant stakeholder meetings and conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, developing content, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
• Undertakes outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations on assigned topics/activities, e.g., through the Academy, and in Supply Chain pilots.
• Participates in or lead field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties, and drafting mission summaries, etc.
• Coordinates activities related to budget and funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
• Performs other duties as required.
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in business administration, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
• A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management/administration in the areas of sustainable development and corporate sustainability, or related area, is required.
• Experience collaborating and working with both private sector and public sector/international organizations on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Supply Chain Pilots is desirable.
• Experience related to SMEs and Supply Chain Pilots at the regional or international level is desirable.
• Experience with fundraising or resources mobilization with concrete results is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
