Cadre organisationnel
This position is located in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Department of Peace Operations (DPPA-DPO), CSAD Division, in the Great Lakes and Southern Africa Team, under the daily supervision of the Team Leader and the overall guidance of the Director and the Deputy Director of CSAD.
Responsabilités
Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
•Review and monitor developments in the assigned countries/region of the Great Lakes and Southern Africa;
•Provide up-to-date information regarding substantive political matters as well as country, sub-regional or regional issues, and make recommendations on actions to be taken;
•Draft a wide-range of documents, including briefing notes, background papers and talking points for senior officials, as well as correspondence, statements, and reports as required;
•Participate in fact finding missions and assists in providing support to UN operations and offices as appropriate;
•Cover Security Council and General Assembly deliberations on relevant political issues;
•Develop and maintain collaborative relationships contacts with the UN Common System colleagues and counterparts, government representatives, civil society actors, academic and research institutions, and other international organizations, mechanisms on information sharing, coordination and policy matters;
•Perform other related duties as required.

Formation
A first-level university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related field.
Expérience professionnelle
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, economic development, public administration, conflict resolution, or related area is required.
Experience working at United Nations Headquarters, UN field mission/office or a regional organization in Africa is required.
Experience on the Great Lakes and Southern Africa region is desirable.
No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations National Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).
Connaissances linguistiques
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post advertised, fluency in English and French is required.

• Retirees above the mandatory age of separation who wish to be considered for the current temporary job opening must indicate the reason for their last separation as “retirement.” Such retirees shall not be employed by the Organization, unless (a) the operational requirements of the Organization cannot be met by staff members who are qualified and available to perform the required functions; and (b) the proposed employment would not adversely affect the career development or redeployment opportunities of other staff members and represents both a cost-effective and operationally sound solution to meet the needs of the service.
