Background
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In addition, other at-risk individuals and families are served through employment services, job readiness training, adult education, and immigration services.
Internship Summary
The R&P Intern will work with refugees during their first 90 days in Wichita. This will include welcoming a new arrival at the airport, setting up the household, assisting with cultural orientation, and understanding the challenges of those arriving in the United States after years of fleeing persecution and violence. The intern will work directly under the supervision and guidance of the R&P Caseworker.
Activities
- Prepare for refugees to arrive in the United States by assisting with securing proper housing, purchasing necessities for the families, and setting up their new house ;
- Provide direct resettlement services to individual refugees and families according to donor requirements and guidance, including assisting with airport pick-ups; providing home safety visits; enrolling families in public benefits; enrolling children in schools, enrolling adults in community English classes; attending health screenings and medical/dental/vision appointments; and making referrals to community resources ;
- Improve client accessibility and understanding to available programs ;
- Expand opportunities for client housing and community integration through research and outreach ;
- Create case notes regarding all services provided to or on behalf of a refugee or a refugee family.
Time Commitment
- For the sake of stability and continuity, the IRC asks for a minimum commitment of 3 – 6 months, with at least 5-10 hours per week.
Training
- In-depth training will be provided for interns to understand resettlement programming and the various needs of clients accessing R&P services. A high-level of confidentiality is required when working with IRC clients.
Profil
Skills & Qualifications
- Comfortable working with diverse populations and English language learners ;
- Previous experience working with refugees, asylees and other vulnerable populations preferred, but not required ;
- Experience working in social work/social services preferred, but not required ;
- Possess personal vehicle and valid driver’s license.
