Position summary: 

The Economic Inclusion Programs Intern assists HIAS New York’s Program Manager, Signature Approaches with outreach, case management, employment, and other resettlement services for refugees and other eligible migrants. The Economic Inclusion Programs include Refugee Social Service Programs and American Futures.

Note, this position is remote and unpaid, but may be pursued for academic credit. We ask that applicants be available for approximately 10-15 hours/week for a 3-month period beginning in the summer of 2021. 

Essential functions: 

  • Undergoes training with HIAS New York staff ;
  • Assists in establishing working relationships with employers, industry organizations, and public agencies to source job openings and secure employment for HIAS New York clients ;
  • Assists in actively conducting outreach activities to recruit eligible participants for HIAS New York economic inclusion programs, including Refugee Social Service Programs and American Futures ;
  • Assists in the facilitation of employment services, including resume writing, filling job applications, and job placement services, under the Refugee Social Service Programs and American Futures ;
  • Brings commitment and integrity to accomplishing HIAS’ mission and goals in all assigned duties, in addition to a professional dedication to the implementation of all HIAS’ core values ;
  • Provides administrative support to HIAS New York staff as needed.

Qualifications & requirements: 

  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree ;
  • Fluency in Dari/Pashto and Arabic required ;
  • Excellent technical, organizational and communication skills ;
  • Strong commitment to serve vulnerable individuals ;
  • Ability to work with diverse populations ;
  • Experience working in workforce development and/or social adjustment programs ;
  • Knowledge of refugee resettlement case management or refugee/immigrant/asylum seeker service experience preferred.
