UN Nutrition (UNN) is the UN coordination mechanism for nutrition and gathers UN agencies with a mandate or interest in improving nutrition as a means to achieving sustainable development. The UNN Strategy (2022-2030) (under development) describes one of UNN’s areas of collaboration is on collective knowledge management by curating and disseminating existing knowledge in a way that works for countries and meets their needs and priorities. As part of this key area, UNN can develop knowledge products about issues that have been identified through periodic surveys on emerging issues (EIA). The latest UNN analysis of emerging issues, conducted in 2021 amongst UNN members and stakeholders, classified environmental topics as of high relevance to global nutrition. “Healthy diets, including access and cost” had the highest citation. The analyses also showed that there are many unanswered questions around healthy diets from sustainable food systems, from true cost, access to food (as a pillar of food security), sustainable production practices, plant-rich diets, biodiversity, etc.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), one of the UNN Steering Committee members, proposes to contribute to bring the environment and nutrition communities together by shedding more light on the multiple interlinkages between environmental and nutritional problems, as well as contribute to identify how both communities can collaborate to addressing the problems. The study will be led by UNEP, as a contribution to UNN in its role as a member of UNN Steering Committee (SC).
UNEP aims to hire an expert on food systems, environment, and nutrition to support UNEP in advancing the afore-mentioned efforts and agenda. He/she will develop the knowledge product described in the sections below. This is part-time and home-based consultancy.
