Overview of the functions of the post

Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Research, Policy and Foresight Section within the Social and Human Sciences Sector (SHS/RPF) and the direct supervision of the Head of Futures Literacy, the Project Officer in Futures Literacy will support the development, management and implementation of UNESCO’s Futures Literacy agenda with a special emphasis on two axes of work: Priority Africa and specific funded partnerships.

The Project Officer will work closely with members of the Global Futures Literacy Network to bring high level expertise to projects undertaken by the SHS Future Literacy Team, seeking both synergies across activities and new opportunities for collaboration. Over the duration of this contract, the Project Officer will take major responsibility for numerous projects, with a priority on two key partnerships – the first with the OCP Foundation of Morocco, entitled the Imagining Africa’s Futures project, and the second, with the Prince Mohammad bin Fahd University to build Futures Literacy (FL) capabilities at local, regional and international levels. The Project Officer will play a central role in the design, organisation, and on-the-ground implementation of specialised Futures Literacy research projects and Futures Literacy Laboratories, including working directly with local research organisations undertaking research into Anticipatory Systems and Processes and the ‘local champions’ responsible for initiating and organising Laboratories.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In particular, the incumbent willl:

  • Support the design, organisation, and on-the-ground implementation of Futures Literacy research projects and Futures Literacy Laboratories (FLL), working directly with local and global research organisations, undertaking academic-level research into Anticipatory Systems and Processes, and mobilizing the ‘local champions’ responsible for initiating and organising Laboratories.
  • Lead and steer the design and implementation of a range of Futures Literacy activities, including specific types of Futures Literacy Laboratories (FLL), including FLL-Novelty.
  • Support the outreach and design of Futures Literacy (FL) activities by developing, drafting and revising project proposals and presenting FL projects to targeted audiences and disseminating information about FL initiatives.
  • Interact with potential partners and co-designers as part of the collaborative process leading to the finalisation of proposals for FL projects.
  • Define, coordinate, supervise and ensure the delivery of work performed by consultants, including researchers, designers and facilitators of FL activities, including FLL.
  • Contribute to improve, extend and reinforce FL networks, through engaging new and diverse stakeholders, disseminating information and fostering partnerships.
  • Enhance the Futures Literacy capabilities of stakeholders, researchers, network members and colleagues.
  • Draft memos, reports and implement actions following participation in FL activities.

EXPECTED DELIVERABLES

Expected deliverables

  • Build the Global Futures Literacy Network, including the initiation, refinement and operation of the specialized UNESCO Chairs in Futures Studies/Futures Literacy.
  • Author elements of the work being done to test and report on design principles for conducting activities that cultivate Futures Literacy, in particular in Africa.
  • Contribute to new research into:
    1. the nature and role of anticipation (using the future) in Africa
    2. “action-learning” processes harnessing collective intelligence to create new knowledge in Africa
    3. design principles for initiating open explorations of the potential of the present in specific contexts in Africa
  • Actively diffuse Futures Literacy, primarily in Africa, helping to build communities of practice, including UNESCO Chairs.
  • Produce evidence that contributes to defining and understanding capability-based approaches to development and peace.

Required qualifications

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Social Sciences.

Work experience

  • A minimum of four years of experience in the field of social sciences specifically related to Futures Studies, including the design and implementation of ‘futures thinking’ exercises, and use and development of various ‘futures’ tools and methods.
  • Experience as a co-designer and facilitator of Futures Literacy Labsoratories, in particular experience playing the role of lead facilitator of such action-learning processes.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with partners from the Africa and Arab states regions.

Skills and competencies

  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills, in English and French.
  • Ability to work independently, to plan, prioritize and to demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to establish excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and to work in a multicultural team, with respect and sensitivity to diversity.

Desirable qualifications

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Ph.D or equivalent) in the field of Social Sciences.

  • Knowledge of Futures Studies and collective intelligence knowledge creation processes, specifically Futures Literacy Laboratories, including design and small-group facilitation.

Languages

  • Knowledge of an African language and/or Arabic.
