Description :

Project Manager, Guinea Bissau (Subject to confirmation of funding)

Fluency in Portuguese and English required

The starting salary for this position is £50,104 per annum, approx. $68,843 USD including all allowances.

About MAG:

MAG saves lives and builds futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, to reduce the daily risk of death or injury for civilians, and to create safe and secure conditions for development. MAG shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for our work to ban landmines. Our vision is a safe and secure future for men, women and children affected by armed violence and conflict.

About the Guinea Bissau programme:

In early 2022, MAG will establish a start-up project in Guinea Bissau. The project will seek to strengthen the organisational and operational capacities of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) and national security and defence sector institutions in Weapons and Ammunition management. The country declared completion of their mine clearance obligation under Article 5 of the Convention in 2012.  However, mined areas were discovered following recent accidents. This project will also see MAG work to improve Guinea Bissau’s ability to deliver an expanded and high-quality humanitarian mine action programme to address the legacy contamination, and in turn make affected regions safer for vulnerable communities and internally displaced people. In supporting Guinea Bissau, MAG will be collaborating closely with ECOWAS Commission.

About the role:

The Project Manager will be responsible for providing senior level support to the Regional Programmes Manager (RPM) in the effective integration of strategic, programmatic and operational management and the development of new business, in compliance with contractual obligations and MAG’s mission and mandate. The PM will be responsible for the representation of MAG at country level meetings across wide range of stakeholders and will develop effective relationships and networks with stakeholders including national and local authorities, donors, UN agencies, national partners, NGO forums, the wider NGO, community and commercial operators in the region. They will also support the RPM in identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand MAG programme activities in new locations within the country, and be responsible for national partner project management and implementation, and external programme communications when delegated.

About you:

The successful candidate will have significant experience in working in development and humanitarian program related field operations in developing countries, and experience of developing and supporting projects including implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation and contract compliance. You will have proven expertise in the development of new business, including proposal development, networking and contract negotiations, and experience of having developed successful relationships and negotiated with donors, government bodies, other NGOs and local partners. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels internally and externally will be key to the role.

Fluency in English and Portuguese are essential.

Please note that as part of MAG’s commitment to safeguarding, this post is subject to background checks before an offer of employment is confirmed.
