We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities
Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organisation that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally. Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organisations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.
Summary job description
Coastal communities are on the frontlines of the climate emergency. But climate breakdown poses an existential threat to all of humanity. Mangroves and other coastal wetlands are the cornerstone of climate change adaptation across our coastlines and, thanks to their unique capacity to store carbon in their muddy soils, they are also one of nature’s most powerful mitigation solutions. To maximise the impact of the conservation and restoration of these wetlands, communities must play a leading role.
For over a decade, Blue Ventures has innovated ways for tropical coastal communities to both safeguard mangroves and earn a better living from them. We are world leaders in human rights based blue carbon, developing climate finance initiatives that put communities first. In southwest Madagascar we have supported the development of the largest locally-led mangrove carbon project in the world. We also advance the science, produce new tools and methodologies, and we share our findings so that everyone can benefit. Blue Ventures is seeking a Technical Advisor to provide operational and strategic technical leadership to our mangrove and blue carbon work. As sector leaders in blue carbon, we have learned a lot over the last decade. Building on this learning, this new position will work across the organisation to further advance our mangrove and blue carbon work, refining existing solutions and spearheading innovation − including creative design of climate finance initiatives, as well as continuous improvement of systems and processes. Helping to ensure this learning is strategically incorporated into our 2025 goals and objectives.
Working closely with our team of global and country-specific mangrove and blue carbon technical advisors, the role will also lead the technical support and training we offer community organisations and partner NGOs. It will play a key role in nurturing and energising an internal community of practice that promotes a supportive learning culture and seeks to ensure that Blue Ventures’ mangrove and blue carbon work is informed by global best practice.
This is a varied and highly rewarding role that includes leading a small but dynamic global technical support team.
The role reports to Blue Ventures’ Conservation Programmes Director. It is a full time role based at one of Blue Ventures’ global offices and involves overseas travel to work with field-based teams and partners.
