Overview of the CLEANED model
The CLEANED model is an ex-ante tool developed by the Alliance of CIAT & Bioversity International, ILRI, and partners. It assesses the environmental impacts of livestock systems and value chains in terms of land requirements, water use, soil health, greenhouse gas emissions, and economics.
While CLEANED is already used extensively, the tool is continuously being improved and adapted to users’ requirements, including the development of benchmarks for environmental indicators.
Position Summary
Alliance is seeking to recruit a BENCHMARK CLEANED intern who will perform a systematic search to identify the environmental footprints of livestock systems in East Africa that supports the development of a benchmark table to be incorporated (as a parameter database) into the CLEANED tool. This will allow CLEANED users to benchmark the environmental footprint results against ranges of values reported for similar livestock systems in their country or region.
The systematic search will build on the concepts developed and data sources identified by Bosire et al. (https://cgspace.cgiar.org/handle/10568/114687) and will include published papers, grey literature and secondary data sources. The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya office.

- Create a methodology for expressing the literature values in the units used in the CLEANED footprint calculations.
- A benchmark table that includes:
ü The methodologies used for the environmental evaluations,
ü The main findings in terms of productivity, environmental footprints (land requirements, water use, soil health, and greenhouse gas emissions, carbon captures) of the livestock production systems.
- Any other task assigned by the supervisor
Requirements
- MSc student in livestock production, environmental sciences or related topic.
- Good understanding of the livestock-environment interactions.
- Proficient in MS Word and Excel, familiar with database management.
