Appel à candidature : Agence Spatiale Européenne (ESA) recrute un.e Consultant.e interne en modélisation de l’environnement des météoroïdes au Pays-Bas.

Field(s) of activity/research for the traineeship

You will support the development of Micrometeoroid, Small Debris and/or dust models with regards to interstellar, interplanetary and local environments, as in the proximity to celestial bodies as planetoids or comets. The work will involve identification and modelling of the sources of particle release mechanism and propagation of generated dust through local, planetary and Solar system(s) including relevant propagation effects.

The main aim of such environment models is to provide the characteristics of particles impacting on oriented surfaces along a spacecraft trajectory or at a planetoid surface location, including for example impact velocity vector, particle size and mass. In addition to the bottom-up physics-based modelling you will compare models with in-flight data, independent engineering and scientific environment models, as far as available.

You will support upcoming ESA mission studies and projects where particle environments are not sufficiently known. These may be in the context of science or human and robotic exploration and targeting Comets, the Outer Solar System, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Mars.

Technical competencies

Education

You should have recently completed, or be close to completion of a PhD in Physics or Astronomy. Preference  will  be  given  to applications submitted by candidates within  five  years of receiving their PhD.

Additional requirements

You should also have:

– Experience in (dust/meteoroid/debris) particle environment modelling
– Experience in relevant processes and simulation of small particle propagation
– Experience with interplanetary spacecraft missions
– Experience in software development

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
