Component Test Facilities Engineer in the Radiation Hardness Assurance and Component Analysis Section, Technical Reliability and Quality Division, Product Assurance and Safety Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
The Radiation Hardness Assurance and Component Analysis Section provides functional support to ESA projects and carries out technological research and development (R&D) in the fields of EEE (electrical, electronic and electromechanical) component radiation effects and reliability assessment. The Section is also responsible for the day-to-day operation of the ESA component laboratory, including preparation and execution of radiation test campaigns, development of the test set-up and subsequent data analysis in support of the Agency’s projects, studies, evaluation, qualification, or radiation hardening activities.
Duties
Reporting to the Head of the Section and within the technical fields described above, your main tasks and responsibilities will include:
• coordinating the state-of-the-art component testing capabilities in view of ESA’s short-, medium- and long-term needs; • representing the Agency in the collaborative entities involved in the medium- and long-term evolution of component test facilities, methods and campaigns; • coordinating and managing ESA-funded activities in support of component test facilities; • defining, initiating, and managing relevant roadmaps, studies and experimental/development activities under ESA contracts; • supporting the Section’s standardisation activities, particularly those involving general component testing and analysis; • coordinating activities in the domain with internal and external partners and promoting the results achieved in the form of publications, presentations and training; • contributing to the definition of a roadmap of component testing activities on the key component technologies; • participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and evaluation of procurement proposals; • identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution; • contributing to the definition of technology development requirements and work plans for the Agency’s technology programmes; • defining, initiating and managing R&D activities covering both long- and short-term needs; • fostering new application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cutting-edge technologies and system architectures; • conducting laboratory activities, as required; • monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining state-of-the-art expertise; • contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency.
Education
A master’s or equivalent in electrical/electronic engineering, applied (solid state) physics or a similar field relevant to the post is required.
Additional requirements
Experience in component testing, analysis and radiation hardness assurance. Knowledge and proven experience in testing electronic components’ suitability for space applications. Hands-on laboratory experience with characterisation techniques in the domain. Proven experience in establishing and executing complex evaluation test plans as well as setting up and performing test campaigns; this also requires experience in discussing with customers their needs and translating these needs into test requirements. Experience in the field of reliability with semiconductor components and all aspects of space environmental testing. Ability to conduct research autonomously.
