Job Purpose
The IRRI Service Laboratories Cluster provides high quality routine plant, soil, and water analytical services, grain quality services and genotyping services, across IRRI research platforms. In collaboration with the research platforms, ISL aims to develop and implement new methods, techniques and technologies relevant to their needs, and coordinate and facilitate the outsourcing of some of its low demand-services.
Under the general supervision of Manager – Research Support, design improvements and innovations on instruments, laboratory databases and analysis-related processes. Facilitate analysis, monitoring, control and data acquisition. Supervise the maintenance of instruments and equipment, and provide technical support in method development and validation of new and existing analysis procedures. Administer and manage existing databases to ensure optimum lab performance and integrity of the database system, evaluate/improve and develop new db functionalities/programs to cope with ISL’s emerging data management requirements.
This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct process/design improvement and/or innovation on various laboratory instruments, in-house developed databases and analysis-related processes for more efficient ISL processes
- Design, develop new modules for ISL database programs and train staff on its functionalities
- Supervise the maintenance of instruments and equipment and improve and upgrade equipment when needed
- Provide technical support in the method development and validation of new and existing analysis procedures and related activities
- Provide service support and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and computers attached to the equipment
- Improve, gather, develop, modify, and maintain data in the field of laboratory chemical analysis using information database management system
- Coordinate and communicate with colleagues to facilitate analysis, monitoring, control and data acquisition
- Coordinate closely with end users on the development of information system and train end users on the use of or access to information system
- Evaluate and plan instrument needs to improve the unit’s capacity on increasing sample throughput
- Perform method development and validation on different instruments and evaluate instrument performance in compliance with its ISO 17025 accreditation
- Evaluate and test new software, hardware, and equipment for improvement
- Supervise and /or train staff in the operation and routine maintenance of instruments as needed
- Plan, design and develop database/ information system for end user
- Administer information system (e.g. database (server), website); validate and monitor data for information systems to ensure the integrity and consistency
- Review, finalize and coordinate the implementation of document and material from info systems
- Produce documentations and materials coming from information system such as codes, tables and reports
- Manage the storage and retrieval of data and information
- Collate, compile, validate, edit and archive data on analytical records/ research projects
- Recommend new features for data management (for databases, websites etc)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering Applied Physics or related field;
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in advanced operation, performance validation, repair and maintenance of Research Instruments.
Skills Required
Mandatory
- Experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of Optical Emission Spectrometers/ Mass spectrometers, Colorimeters, and Combustion analyzer;
- Proven advanced graphical user interface software development skill such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Visual Basic, MySQL relational database, National Instruments Labview;
- Experience in the design, implementation of equipment interfacing to computers
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office 2010 and up;
- Knowledge of the design and implementation programmable logic controllers, pneumatics servomotor & controllers;
- Can work with minimum supervision.
