This is an exciting opportunity to join Alert’s largest country programme – the Democratic Republic of Congo team – as the Chief of Party (COP) of our new Dutch funded*‘Strengthening Access to Justice in the Great Lakes’* regional project. This is a senior management position within Alert’s DRC programme and reports directly to the Director of Programmes. The COP will be responsible for the oversight of a consortium team including 2 other partners.

The project seeks to contribute to improved access to justice to reduce tensions and strengthen stability in the Great Lakes Region. It is being implemented in both the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda around 5 border points. The project started on December 1st, 2022 and will run for four-years.

The COP is the project’s lead representative on location, responsible for representing the project, heading up political engagement, daily direction, oversight, and implementation of a project’s activities and achievement of goals. The COP will be responsible for the overall implementation of the project; she/he will be the main focal point with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN), will manage and monitor the budget, the workplan and the progress of the project towards its intended results. He/she will take the lead on reporting and on coordination across the consortium partners and components of the project. The COP will travel regularly to the 5 targeted borders between DRC and Rwanda to supervise the sub-team based there and will also frequently travel to regional centres for national and regional level advocacy, such as Kinshasa or Kigali.

Essential qualifications include: extensive experience of implementing large and complex projects in consortia; at least 10 years of professional experience in programme management in the fields of peacebuilding or rule of law; with progressive responsibility on projects of a similar scope and scale in the DRC, the Great Lakes region or in a similar context. Furthermore, we are looking for someone well organized, results and detail-oriented with a proven experience in peacebuilding/conflict transformation and familiarity with gender- and conflict-sensitive approaches. In addition, experience of developing donor reports and nurturing constructive relationships with international and local partners (governmental and non-governmental) is essential as well as an excellent working knowledge (spoken and written) of both French and English.
