Overview of the Programme
The Defra-funded Biodiversity Landscape Fund aims to reduce poverty and create sustainable economic development for communities living in, and dependent upon, environmentally precious landscapes. It will restore landscapes and deliver their long-lasting protection through sustainable management practices, improving the quality of ecosystems and safeguarding biodiversity. Protecting landscapes and habitats will also help to tackle climate change with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through protection of natural carbon sinks. It will address the drivers of environmental degradation and support local governments, local and park authorities and communities to deliver long-term sustainable management and use of natural resources.
We are currently welcoming applications from experienced Communications Managers for an upcoming global grant and fund management programme. The £100M programme is expected to be mobilise in mid to late 2021 and will run for 7-9 years.
We are particularly keen to hear from Communications Managers who can rise to the challenge of:
- Delivering ambitious, complex, innovative, multi-country projects and programmes across a number of teams.
- Crafting the best mix of tailored support to governments through programmes with a range of instruments (e.g. expert technical assistance, finance and grants to build capacity, work with private firms and supply chains, private and blended finance and incubation, knowledge services) in themes or sectors of climate change and biodiversity.
The Communications Manager will need to be based in the United Kingdom with possible global travel. Under the leadership of the Team Leader, you will contribute to the successful implementation of the Fund.
Responsibilities
Internal Communications
- Develop and implement a creative, innovative and state-of-the-art integrated communications strategy with targeted messages for stakeholders demonstrating results, success stories, outcomes, and learning from the Fund
- Act as the focal point for all internal communications between the Leadership team
- Lead on all internal communications for grantee calls and the donor communications calls
- Coordinate events calendar and speaking engagements to raise the profile of the Fund and disseminate information
- Work with the Fund leadership team in driving and steering programme outreach activities. Define key actors to be engaged, specific messages to be utilised in targeting, channels to be used and activities to be conducted as part of outreach.
External Communications
- Establish and maintain the Fund’s website, social media and online presence, ensuring continued compliance with Defra’s digital policy and practices ;
- Produce and support dissemination of the Fund’s publications, including editorial support, copy-editing as needed, branding/formatting, arranging translation, printing and distribution as needed ;
- Lead social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), soliciting inputs from team members and partners ;
- Act as the main point of contact for the press and coach Fund staff for media interviews ;
- Dissemination of Learning and Key Knowledge Products ;
- Lead the development specific communications products to support the dissemination of learning and key knowledge products, including those from grantees ;
- Support the Fund team in producing high quality client deliverables, including quarterly and annual reports ;
- Establish and implement standard operating procedures and mechanisms for collection and distribution of information and knowledge materials from project staff and stakeholders ;
- Lead on the strategy and implementation of large-scale events, including sub-contracting of venues, facilitators and advisers as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Substantial experience of designing communication and outreach strategies, preferable on large, complex programmes ;
- Experience in writing and content for a range of stakeholder groups, including but not limited to social media channels, website, external publications, articles, newsletters, project reports, photos, infographics, social media messaging ;
- Knowledge and understanding of biodiversity and conservation, including key stakeholders, is desirable ;
- Engagement with private sector, social enterprises, not-for-profits, start-ups, accelerators and / or incubators in developing countries ;
- Good understanding of donor funded programmes and strong affinity with international development ;
- Experience in event management would be an asset ;
- Demonstrated self-starter who thrives in a dynamic and fast-moving commercial environment and able to get to grips with our business quickly ;
- Written and verbal fluency in English; French and Spanish language skills desirable.
