The CANALLS project “Driving agroecological transitions in the humid tropics of Central and Eastern Africa through traNsdisciplinary Agroecology Living LabS” is recruiting a researcher in systems agronomy. This position is based within the ESTIME team (Evaluation of Integrated and Multi-Scale Cropping Systems) of CIRAD’s AIDA research unit, whose main objective is the integrated assessment of cropping systems.
As part of the CANALLS project, we aim at developing practical tools to identify combinations of agroecological practices suited to the humid tropics of Africa, and to monitor and measure their socio-economic and environmental performance.
You will be responsible for :
i) The design of a conceptual framework and methodologies for creating optimal combinations of agroecological practices at farm scale ;
ii) Developing and producing effective agroecological practices;
iii) Assessing the environmental and ecological effects of the agroecological practices and strategies implemented in the Living Labs of the CANALLS project;
iv) Contributing to the scientific coordination and management of the CANALLS project.
You will be posted in Rwanda in a multidisciplinary research team. In addition to agroecology research aspects, you will be required to integrate your results into specific agroecology strategies, interacting with various stakeholders of the CANALLS project. The expected results will cover a wide range of farming contexts in the humid tropical regions of Central and East Africa, and you will be required to work at several project sites.
PhD in systems agronomy and/or plant community ecology applied to cultivated environments.
PhD degree obtained from May 2020 onwards. Before this date, applications will not be eligible.
– A good capacity to integrate knowledge from different fields of agronomy will also be necessary to develop research in agroecology
– Experience in multi-species agroecosystems (e.g., intercropping) is desirable
– Competence in statistical analysis
– Ability to analyse and synthesize results, good oral and written communication skills.
– Ability to work in a team and in partnership with agricultural professionals.
– Good knowledge of French and scientific and technical English.
– Experience with working in African countries is appreciated.
