The Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services Middle East and Africa (MAS MEA) Department is recruiting a Senior Investment Officer (Senior IO) to join the portfolio team responsible for managing IFC clients in the Manufacturing, Agribusiness, Health, Education, Tourism, Retail and Property sectors across sub-Saharan Africa. The Senior Investment Officer will report directly to the Portfolio Manager for West, Central and Southern Africa. He/she will be based in Dakar, Senegal.
Role & Responsibilities :
The Senior IO will support the MAS Portfolio Manager for West, Central and Southern Africa in several essential portfolio management tasks and with direct supervision of some IFC clients.
The Senior IO responsibilities include but are not limited to :
- Significantly contribute to ensure Financial Sustainability for the MAS Portfolio for sub-Saharan Africa ;
- Manage proactively some MAS Portfolio transactions for sub-Saharan Africa ;
- with a focus on Arrears, Watch-List action items, Active Equity Management (including the execution of IFC Equity Sales strategy) and Timely Disbursement or Cancellations when relevant ;
- Liaise closely with the following departments: Credit, Special Operations, Equity, Legal and MAS Upstream and MAS New Business teams for thoroughness in quality control and make recommendations to strengthen transactions ;
- Ensure high quality of Well-Priced Commitments for Repeat Transactions ;
- Monitor Business Performance and Compliance with IFC investment agreements, identify Early Warning signs, and, when necessary, formulate/implement strategies for Workouts, Restructurings or Rescheduling ;
- Provide Quality Control for the partners assigned in the Investment Risk Platform (IRP) by reviewing their Probability of Default (PD) and Loss Given Default (LGDs) ;
- Liaise with the various IFC teams for Compliance tasks including but not limited to Insurance, Environment & Social (E&S), Controllers (CNT), etc. ;
- Work closely with the Portfolio Officers on the portfolio issues related to their respective transactions ;
- Prepare Lessons Learned Notes on the Portfolio and disseminate them within the department ;
- Mentor and Develop junior staff.
Selection Criteria :
- MBA, Master’s degree in Finance or equivalent ;
- At least 10-12 years of work experience for a major commercial or investment bank with significant emerging markets presence, an international financial institution or a private equity firm ;
- At least 4-5 years of work experience in portfolio supervision, with proven success in supervising transactions and managing client relationships ;
- Good Knowledge of and experience in emerging markets, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa ;
- Strong business judgment in identifying and assessing risk ;
- Strong financial and credit skills; sound business judgment and demonstrated ability to structure a variety of financial instruments (Debt, Mezzanine and Equity) ;
- Client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on client needs effectively ;
- Ability to interact directly and independently with the senior management of clients, financial and technical partners as well as senior government officials ;
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to work successfully in multicultural teams and across boundaries and to build networks across the region, including the ability to mentor and coach others to achieve results ;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills ;
- Proven ability to work independently and deliver promptly and efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines ;
- Willingness to travel extensively and geographic flexibility ;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Fluency in French and/or Portuguese is a plus.
