The United Nations World Food Programme (UN WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. The core policies and strategies that govern WFP activities are: save lives in emergency situations; improve the nutrition and quality of life of the most vulnerable people; and to help build assets and promote the self-reliance of poor people and communities, particularly through conditional food for work and training programmes.
The challenges of working in difficult conditions to bring much needed food and support to our recipients while inherently rewarding, can place a great deal of pressure and stress on WFP staff. As a part of a multidisciplinary team under the Staff Wellness Division, the Staff Counselling Unit is committed to the promotion of psychological and physical health in the broadest sense so staff can continue to function at high levels in order to meet the mandate of the organization. We do this by identifying and addressing psychological risk factors in the workplace, and through the provision of counselling services to staff members and their dependents.
The UN WFP is looking for a highly qualified Staff Counsellor to join the Staff Wellness Division based in Dakar covering the country offices in the Regional Bureau Dakar (RBD).
This position is based in our Regional Bureau for West Africa (RBD), Dakar, Senegal. RBD covers 19 countries of varied geo-ecological contexts, in different phases of development and facing diverse challenges related to hunger and malnutrition.
WFP operations in the region respond to conflict-driven hunger and provide integrated gender and nutrition sensitive packages to improve food security and nutrition; build livelihoods, restore eco-systems where climatic factors are the drivers of need; support the creation of income generating opportunities; build social cohesion and support governments to reach sustainable development which eventually has a peace and stability dividend.
The Staff Counsellor will administratively report to the Deputy Regional Director and technically report to the Chief of Staff Counselling in Rome. A key requirement of the position will be the ability to summarize data and trends to develop programs and policies that are designed to support staff. Frequent travel is required from the Staff Counsellor to support the country offices, at times on short notice based on operational needs, and also at times to remote and difficult locations to provide support to staff.
