Context:
The Youth Mixed Migration Project is a study on the drivers and policy and service needs of young migrants and displaced persons (ages 15-29 years) in transit cities. It is conducted by UNFPA in partnership with the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) using a rapid appraisal methodology. Phase 1 of the project collected the data in four cities in 2017/18 – Nairobi, (Kenya), Tunis (Tunisia), Cairo (Egypt), and Beirut (Lebanon). Phase 2 of the project collected data in three West African cities: Bamako (Mali), Niamey (Niger), and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) in late 2020. Building on lessons learned from the rapid appraisals, UNFPA aims to implement a set of operational trials of youth service interventions to address the identified needs of young migrants in transit cities. The services provided will also be accessible to the local populations to enhance the welfare of migrants and the local populations simultaneously and minimize the chances of resentment of migrants and refugees in the host communities.
