ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT
The Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) is responsible for the organization and coordination of the work of the Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) of the Union which deals mainly with ICT-focused development policies, strategies and programmes, as well as technical cooperation activities, to promote digital inclusion and drive digital transformation at community, country and regional levels. To effectively and efficiently serve the needs of ITU members, BDT is organized into four functional areas:
- Office of the Deputy to the Director and Field Operations Coordination Department
- Partnerships for Digital Development Department
- Digital Networks & Society Department
- Digital Knowledge Hub Department
The Digital Networks & Society Department is responsible for BDT activities in the areas of spectrum management, network development, cybersecurity and emergency telecommunications. This department is also responsible for supporting ITU Member States in their transition to digital societies by providing tools and guidelines to address environmental challenges (in particular, climate change and e-waste), and for promoting innovation, ICT applications/services, digital inclusion and ecosystems, with the ultimate goal to ‘leave no one behind’.
Under the supervision of the Head of Division, the intern will:
1. Support activities related to the implementation of the outcomes related to the Thematic Priority on Networks and Digital Infrastructure. It includes support to the FNS division on aspects pertaining to use of Telecommunication satellites (LEO, MEO, GEO) and High Altitude Platforms (HAPS) in providing connectivity and broadcasting services.
2. Conduct research and propose solutions related to satellite companies, orbital positions, frequency usage, coverage areas, services costs, manufacturing and launch costs, economics, policies and regulations in satellite sphere. Assist in the organization of internal and external meetings/events on satellite communications, including reporting on the outcomes of the meetings .
3. Provide support to the FNS coordination activities:
o Providing inputs to presentations, statistics, data visualizations, training material and others.
o Monitoring content released by the specialized press on satellite communications.
o Contributing to development of projects and documentation, including materials to be used in conversations with regions and countries adopting satellite services and national satellite programs.

Understanding of research principles; basic experience with data collection and processing; critical thinking.
Education: Completed undergraduate degree in areas related to information and communication technologies, space and satellite engineering, aerospace engineering, radio physics. Other university degrees will be considered based on the areas of the research.
Experience: No work experience required
Languages: Good knowledge of English for conducting research as well as for drafting and editing documents.
Knowledge of one of the other five official languages of the Union (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) would be an advantage.
